Ilkley Jazz Festival 2017 Line up



This year we are aiming to be bigger and better than previous years!!!
So we have 5 new (to us) venues, 14 amazing acts and 3 events for you to attend.

Ilkley Jazz Festival is a small festival that has been growing steadily over the last 4 years and this year it is going to be even bigger with 14 acts that have just been announced at this years festival and 3 educational events.
Headlining is Ian Shaw one of the worlds best male jazz singers often compared with Kurt Ellling and Mark Murphy, he will be performing at the Winter Gardens on 18th August. Ian will be performing music from his latest album Theory of Joy.




On Saturday 19th there are 5 acts that give the full breadth of the contemporary jazz genre, the day starts at 1pm in the Winter Gardens with Jamil Sheriff’s piano trio, followed by British Jazz Award winning Jamie Brownfields trumpet led quartet, and then Mobo nominated James Mainwaring leads a new sax lead quartet. After a short break for tea, expect a masterclass in jazz singing as Beverley sings Carmichael at 6.30pm followed by John Crawford headlining Saturday with Latin influenced jazz music from his latest Album Times of Tides.

Opening the festival we have the outstanding jazz singer Zoe Gilby from Newcastle performing at Monkmans with bassist Andy Champion on Wednesday 16th. Blues guitarist Dave Smith will be playing way down in the depths of Martinez Cellar Bar. On Thursday jazz singer Julie Edwards will be captivating us at Quinta and the improvisational talents of the Matt Aplin Trio will be playing his project Treppenwitz at Freinds of Ham.
The Wweekend starts with Backchat Brass who will be surprising us with pop up performances around town. Virtuoso saxophonist Stuart MacDonald plays at Monkmans on Friday 18th. On Sunday, Hot Club du Nord, an amazing violin led gypsy band from Newcastle will be playing in the Black Hat. 

The festival closes with the fantastic community jazz band Dales Jam on the Ilkley Banstand.

There are 3 educational events where you can learn a bit more about Jazz, the Late night jazz jam is your chance to play, the long running workshop and the masterclass are all free!
There are also another 8 events around town in various venues including Monkmans, Quinta, The Band-stand, The Black Hat, Friends of Ham and Martinez.

First time to the festival for Zoe, coming from Newcastle Zoe will be performing an intimate set of voice and  accompanied by the bass playing husband Andy Champion

Dave Smith        
As we all know jazz is based on the blues, Dave Smith is a traditional styled blues guitarist and singer, expect old school blues!

Julie Edwards duo                          
Nominated and shortlisted for the Yorkshire Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 2010, Derbyshire born vocalist Julie Edwards brings Kevin Dearden to Ilkley for a classic set of Jazz Standards

Treppenwitz

Ian Shaw - Theory of Joy
It is a great pleasure for us to have Ian Shaw and his trio headline at Ilkley Jazz Festival this year, featuring songs from his recent album Theory of Joy. Ian is joined by his powerhouse trio, Barry Green piano; Mick Hutton bass and Dave Ohm drums.

Jamie Brownfield Quartet
JBQ consists of British Jazz Awards rising star 2016, Jamie on Trumpet. Tom Kincaid Piano, Ken Marley Bass, and Jack Cotterill Drums. This fresh and exciting quartet play a vast range of different styles; their own mix of  New Orleans street beat, swing & reggae.

Beverley Beirne Quartet - Beverley Sings Carmichael
Beverley returns with contemporary renditions of her favourite Hoagy Carmichael songs. Not many singers dare take on Carmichael songs that span the golden age of jazz from 1920s – 1950s, expect ‘a masterclass in jazz singing’ Be Bop Spoken Here,  from one of the UK’s finest jazz singers.

John Crawford  - Times and Tides
Pianist and composer John Crawford returns to Ilkley Jazz Festival  to present his second album Times and Tides, leading a Quintet featuring superb instrumentalists. A musical journey through originals, and arrangements of songs by Jobim, Pat Metheny, Paco de Lucia,  Salif Keita among others, the show, is influenced by Latin American and flamenco sounds.

Hot Club Du Nord
Bring to life the classic repertoire of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club de France. This band has a wealth of experience, knowledge and love of the hot club/ gypsy jazz style.

Ilkley Jazz Festival 2017


OK we are gearing up to get this years festival ready, we have 17 events planned of which 6 are free!

Nicki’s ability to interpret Jazz Classics effortlessly and
stylishly has made her a well-respected Jazz singer over
recent years. She was awarded Jazz Yorkshire
Vocalist of the year 2011

15 March – Jamie Taylor with Sam Dunn
One of Yorkshires master jazz guitarists and jazz composers
visits us in a duo setting with guitarist, Sam Dunn.
Jamie is also the principal guitar lecturer at Leeds College
Of Music

19 Apr - Emma Fisk with James Birkett
Bringing together their shared knowledge of early jazz styles,
Emma Fisk and James Birkett present an entertaining and
informative programme of music associated with the first
great violin and guitar jazz partnership.

17 May – Beverley Beirne with Matt Aplin
Vocalist Beverley returns to Monkmans this time with her
jazz set of well known standards and little known gems.

New Series of jazz events in Ilkley

New Monthly Jazz program coming at Monkmans
Following the success of the performances at Monkmans during Ilkley Jazz Festival, we are working in association with Monkmans to provide some of the finest jazz the North has to offer.
Due to the intimacy of the venue most of the performances will be duo’s with the occasional trio. The performances will accompany a 3 course meal for £32.50 (music and food included). Looking forward to seeing you there!

19 October 2016 – John Bailey and Matt Wells
A classic contemporary jazz guitar duo, from the other side of the Pennines, starts a series of monthly jazz performances, to accompany the fabulous food at Monkmans.
John has just finished touring with Russel Watson, although he has trained in classical guitar as well as jazz, to date John’s albums have all been jazz based.

16 November 2016 – Darren Dunston-Bromley duo
Darren, a leading exponent of jazz guitar (Guitar) will be performing a mix of classic jazz standards with Jenny Molloy (bass). As a composer, arranger and professional musician Darren has performed with many musicians as diverse as Jools Holland to members of Girls Aloud. He is also a regular performer at the Edinburgh Festival, Southport Jazz Festival and Scarborough jazz festival to name but a few. This will be a rare treat to see two of Yorkshires finest musicians.



14 December 2016 Beverley Beirne – Snow Snow Snow!
Join Beverley and her 2 wise men for a lively evening of Christmas jazz tunes and luscious winter songs, all given that special jazzy twist. This show has been running for 5 years and material is constantly added to keep these special songs fresh and contemporary.
Beverley is a jazz singer based in Ilkley however she performs around the country at well known jazz clubs (606, Pizza Express, Jagz, Wakefield Jazz, Seven Jazz) and jazz festivals.

Unfortunately due to an emergency operation Ian the leader of the Firebird quartet will not be able to play.
But we are excited to announce that the fabulous Kate Peters will be stepping in and has a great new album to perform for us and fear not we shall have Firebird a Quartet all fired up and ready to go next year! Meanwhile come and checkout the fabulous kate peters and her fantastic new album...
